What is Mentoring and Preceptorship?
The Story of Mentor
In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus, King of Ithaca, sets out for the Trojan War. Before setting sail with his army, he allocates his elderly and trusted friend, Mentor, to look after his household and his infant son, Telemachus. During the next twenty years, Mentor was there to carry out his role, however, in times of difficulty and challenge, the goddess Athena disguised herself as Mentor and guided young Telemachus in preparing for his journey, helping him to develop the courage and wisdom to reclaim Ithaca and to find his father.
The role of Mentor has evolved to become the modern role we have now of a trusted, learned wise person who provides advice, guidance and counsel.
"Mentoring creates a culture where experience is shared, talent is nurtured, and excellence becomes the standard“ - EIMP
Mentoring is a supportive, developmental relationship in which an experienced individual provides guidance, encouragement, and advice to help another person grow personally and professionally. A mentor helps build confidence, develop skills, explore career opportunities, and achieve long-term goals through shared experience and ongoing support. There are many different types of mentoring programme which may include career support, reverse mentoring, new starters, leadership, academic or clinical mentoring.
Preceptorship is a unique form of mentoring. It is a structured, time-limited period of support in which an experienced practitioner (the preceptor) helps a learner or newly qualified professional (the preceptee) develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to practise safely and effectively in a specific role or clinical environment. It focuses on supervised learning, competency development, and a successful transition into practice. Usually found in health and social care settings for newly registered healthcare professionals in their early careers.
"Preceptorship provides the foundation on which confident, competent, and compassionate professionals build their careers“ - EIMP
